Scotiabank is proud to present the 3rd annual Edmonton Scotiabank Pro-Am in support of the Gordie & Colleen Howe Fund for Alzheimer’s.
The Gordie & Colleen Howe Fund for Alzheimer’s
Gordie and Colleen Howe’s contribution to hockey is legendary, earning them the title of “Mr. and Mrs. Hockey”™. When Colleen lost her battle with dementia in March of 2009, Gordie lost a wife, his children lost a mother, and the world of hockey lost a champion. It was a battle that inspired the Howe family to improve the lives of others affected by the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. In pursuit of this mission, they have attached their name to the Scotiabank Pro-Am for Alzheimer’s Hockey Tournament, originally established by the Baycrest Foundation. An innovative fundraising organization, the Baycrest Foundation supports Baycrest, a health sciences centre affiliated with the University of Toronto. Baycrest is internationally renowned for its scientific research, clinical practice, and health care education dedicated to transforming the journey of aging.
As a result, the Gordie & Colleen Howe Fund for Alzheimer’s represents an important partnership between Baycrest and the Alzheimer Society. Proceeds from the Edmonton event will benefit the Gordie & Colleen Howe Fund for Alzheimer’s which supports the work of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta & Northwest Territories along with care and research in Alzheimer’s and related disorders at Baycrest, an international leader in aging and brain health, headquartered in Toronto.
The Alzheimer Society of Alberta & Northwest Territories
The Alzheimer Society of Alberta & Northwest Territories exists to: heighten awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia; provide support services; and, support research into the cause and a cure for this disease.
Today in Alberta some 40,000 people have dementia, with 17% of these having been diagnosed under the age of 65. This gives Alberta the highest prevalence of early onset of this disease in Canada. Alzheimer’s disease at this point in time has no known cause or cure. Until a cure is found, our Society is here to help and provide support to those impacted by the disease.
The Society’s Programs and Services include:
- Individual care and planning consultations
- Support groups and family programs
- Onsite information and community referrals
- Public education and information sessions
- Safely Home TM (Wandering registry)
